Heat Bracket with Death Heat

A heat bracket with death heat describes a heat sheet in which competitors in early rounds that don’t advance, drop into a sudden death heat. It is their last chance to qualify in order to advance to the next round.

The winners of the first round in a heat bracket with death heat advance to the next round and have to wait till the sudden death heat has finished before it can be played

A Heat tabulations page is used in some sports to determine who advances from each flight.

Advantages:

The heat bracket with death heat can be considered a safety net when the heat sheet is not seeded correctly. If several high skilled competitors are in the same flight and some don’t advance to the next round, they get another chance to advance and stay in the competition.

Disadvantages:

A heat bracket with death heat takes more time to schedule because of the extra flight.

A competitor could win an early flight and knock a competitor into the death heat, then be knocked out by the same person in a later round that qualifies from the heat bracket with death heat.
